Confluent Platform FAQs

What is Confluent Platform?

Confluent Platform is the self-managed deployment of our data streaming platform, allowing you to leverage data streaming, pre-built Kafka connectors, Confluent Schema Registry, and Confluent Platform for Apache Flink® across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.

How is Confluent Platform different from open source Kafka?

Apache Kafka® is a distributed streaming system used for building real-time data pipelines, stream processing, and event-driven applications. Confluent Platform is a complete data streaming platform that goes beyond Kafka to when it comes to securing, connecting, governing, and processing data streams.

At its core, Confluent Platform is powered by an enterprise-grade distribution of open source Kafka. But Confluent Platform’s Kafka engine has been rebuilt with a cloud-native architecture for optimal resource utilization, load autobalancing, and other improvements that make it easier and more cost effective to securely manage and scale. See the complete comparison of Confluent vs. Apache Kafka.

Can I run Kafka on-premises and in the cloud with Confluent Platform?

Yes, Confluent Platform is designed to be deployed across environments. You can run Confluent Platform on-premises in your own data centers, deploy it in private clouds, or deploy it in public cloud environments like AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure. Many Confluent customers use our self-managed data streaming platform for hybrid cloud integration, whether between multiple Confluent Platform deployments or between Confluent Platform and Confluent Cloud.

Does Confluent Platform support Kubernetes deployments?

Yes, Confluent Platform fully supports Kubernetes deployments with Confluent for Kubernetes, a cloud-native control plane for deployment and managing Confluent Platform in any Kubernetes environment. Confluent for Kubernetes is specifically designed to automate the deployment and management of Confluent Platform components on Kubernetes, allowing you to more easily take advantage of the orchestration capabilities for managing your Kafka clusters, Kafka Streams, Schema Registry, and other Confluent Platform services, on-premises or in private or public cloud environments.
